Position Summary
The Machine Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining line equipment to process structural steel components according to project specifications. This role plays a key part in ensuring the accurate and efficient production of
steel beams used in fabrication and construction.
Key Responsibilities
Operate beam line machinery (e.g., Peddinghaus or similar) to cut, drill, cope, and mark structural steel beams.
Interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and CNC files to determine machine setup and material handling requirements.
Load and unload beams using overhead cranes or forklifts, ensuring proper alignment and clamping on the machine.
Monitor machine operations and make adjustments to maintain quality and efficiency.
Inspect finished components to verify dimensions and tolerances using measuring tools (tape measure, square, calipers).
Perform basic preventive maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
Troubleshoot minor mechanical and control issues and report complex problems to maintenance.
Accurately track material and production output using shop floor software or paper logs.
Follow all company safety rules and procedures, including proper use of PPE.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED preferred.
Previous experience operating beam line or CNC fabrication equipment in a steel or
manufacturing environment required.
Strong understanding of structural steel shapes and fabrication processes.
Ability to read blueprints, production drawings, and tape measurements accurately.
Comfortable operating overhead cranes and forklifts (certification preferred).
Mechanically inclined with strong attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced shop environment.
Working Conditions
Industrial fabrication shop with exposure to noise, heat, and steel dust.
Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs regularly.
Overtime and shift work may be required depending on production schedules.
PPE required at all times (steel-toe boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, etc.).
