Job Description
Summary / Objective
The Yard Supervisor oversees daily yard operations to ensure safe, efficient, and organized
handling of materials. This role manages a team responsible for loading, unloading, and storing
steel and fabricated products, coordinates shipping and receiving activities, and maintains
accurate inventory records. The Yard Supervisor must have strong leadership skills, attention to
detail, and proficiency in Excel to provide timely and accurate reporting.
Essential Functions
1. Supervise and lead yard employees, ensuring productivity, safety, and quality standards
are met.
2. Oversee all material handling, loading, unloading, and storage operations.
3. Coordinate inbound and outbound shipments with production and logistics teams.
4. Maintain accurate inventory counts and reconcile discrepancies through regular cycle
counts.
5. Ensure all shipping and receiving documentation is completed correctly and filed timely.
6. Monitor yard layout and organization to optimize space and workflow.
7. Train and coach employees on safety procedures and equipment operation.
8. Track and report daily production, inventory, and shipping metrics using Excel and other
reporting tools.
9. Collaborate with management to identify and implement process improvements.
10. Enforce compliance with company policies and safety standards (PPE, forklift
operations, etc.).
Required Skills and Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of experience in yard, warehouse, or logistics operations; supervisory
experience preferred.
Strong organizational and leadership skills.
Working knowledge of inventory control and shipping/receiving procedures.
Strong computer skills.
Ability to operate and train others on forklifts, cranes, and other yard equipment.
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
Commitment to workplace safety and team development.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in the steel or construction materials industry.
Knowledge of ERP inventory management systems (e.g., Tekla).
Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus.
Physical Demands
The employee is frequently required to sit; climb or balance; push or pull; bend; grasp and
manipulate objects; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or
move up to 50 pounds and must have use of both hands. Specific vision abilities required by
this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability
to adjust focus. The employee must be able to wear all required personal protective equipment
(PPE).
A pre-employment physical and drug screen are required prior to commencement of employment.
